How Verizon's 365-day lock replaced 60-day auto-unlock

For more than a decade, Verizon prepaid customers enjoyed a rare federal obligation: automatic handset unlock around day 61 on many phones, driven by 700 MHz C Block license conditions and TracFone merger commitments. That short clock powered the MVNO hopping economy—run Visible for 60 days, unlock, port to Mint Mobile, repeat.

On January 12, 2026, the FCC Wireless Bureau issued DA 26-43, waiving Verizon's 60-day automatic unlock obligation until the Commission adopts industry-wide rules¹. Verizon then republished unlock policies across its Value prepaid brands, shifting to the CTIA Consumer Code (July 2024 edition): prepaid phones may stay locked for up to one year of paid service, with unlock upon request—not automatic release.

Handset unlocking removes software that restricts a phone to one carrier's SIM or eSIM credentials. BYOD (bring your own device) means activating service on hardware you did not buy from the carrier—typically factory-unlocked phones that never received a carrier lock.

The terms of this waiver apply to all handsets that become active on Verizon's network beginning the day after the release date of this Order.

The policy is no longer theoretical. Visible phone unlock policy: the rules that matter

Visible's published unlock policy (checked September 3, 2026) breaks into two tracks based on your purchase/activation date:

Post–January 20, 2026 activations (current track)

Visible locks any smartphone purchased through Visible for 365 days. Unlock requires all of the following:

1. Purchase on or after January 20, 2026 (Visible's stated effective date).
2. 365 cumulative paid days of active service—not calendar days. If you cancel or let service lapse, the counter pauses and resumes when you reactivate.
3. Manual unlock request after eligibility—Visible will not auto-unlock at day 366.
4. Ordinary usage compliant with Terms of Service.
5. No lost/stolen report and no fraud indicators on the account or device.

Visible explicitly reserves the right to deny unlock requests for policy abuse. Where I'm less sure: how aggressively Visible flags "ordinary usage" in edge cases—I have not submitted test unlock tickets with atypical usage patterns.

Pre–January 20, 2026 activations (grandfather track)

Phones activated before Visible's cutoff may still qualify for the old ~60-day automatic unlock when paid in full and active. If you bought a Visible phone in December 2025 and activated before the cutoff, check your unlock portal before assuming the 365-day rule applies.

If you stop paying for service, your progress toward the 365-day requirement pauses. It will resume once you reactivate your account and continue until you reach a total of 365 paid days of service.

Total Wireless and Tracfone-family brands (Straight Talk, Net10, Simple Mobile, Walmart Family Mobile) operate under the same Verizon Value umbrella. The unlock mechanics mirror Visible:

The practical difference is where you bought the phone, not how long you're locked. A Total Wireless Samsung A16 from Walmart and a Visible Pixel 9a from the Visible app follow the same 365-day paid-service clock if both activated after the cutoff.

BYOD workarounds: what actually bypasses the lock

"BYOD workaround" does not mean tricking a locked Visible phone into early unlock. It means never acquiring the lock in the first place—or using hardware strategies that do not require domestic carrier switching on the locked slot.

Workaround 1: Factory-unlocked hardware (best path)

Buy from the Apple Store (SIM-free/unlocked), Google Store, or certified unlocked refurbished sellers (Swappa, Back Market). These phones ship with no carrier lock—Settings shows Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions before you activate any MVNO.

September 2026 pricing snapshot: Google Pixel 8a unlocked from Google Store starts at $499; used unlocked Pixel 8a units on Swappa average $280–$340 (checked September 4, 2026). Higher upfront cost, zero unlock wait.

Workaround 2: Run destination MVNO IMEI checks before you port

Unlocking does not fix band incompatibility or VoLTE certification gaps. Before porting from Visible to Mint or US Mobile, run both carriers' IMEI checkers. A phone can be unlocked yet still fail activation on the wrong host network.

Workaround 3: Avoid Reseller Flex traps

Reseller Flex phones—common at Walmart and Target—lock to whichever carrier's SIM is first inserted. A "universal" box phone can become a Verizon lock on first Visible or Total activation. Buy explicitly unlocked SKUs, not "works with all carriers" flex inventory, if MVNO hopping is your goal.

Workaround 4: Travel eSIM on slot 2 (limited scope)

What does NOT work

• Paying off the phone early (prepaid has no installment payoff unlock shortcut).
• Porting your number (LNP and unlock are separate; ports succeed while activation fails).
• Third-party "unlock services" on active Verizon locks (fraud risk; often ineffective on modern firmware).

Where I'm less sure: whether every 2026 Pixel and iPhone firmware build handles dual eSIM provisioning identically on locked Verizon hardware—I have not tested every OEM combination post-waiver.
